WAY BACK WEDNESDAY!
For this week’s Way Back Wednesday, we again, look back to the 1970’s! Back to the previous location of the Newcastle Paceway.
A few fantastic images of Thorunder, S.K. Flanagan and R. Halverson from our NHRC museum’s archives.
Respectfully, we look way back to local NSW… Horse: THORUNDER, Breeder/trainer: Mr S.K. Flanagan, and trainer/driver: R. Halverson. With just a few highlights from these local harness icons, lustrous careers.
Our first image shows Thorunder (drawn barrier 9) winning the Newcastle 3 y.o Stakes 2010m at Newcastle on October 5th, 1973. At the time, Thorunder’s trainer was: S.K. Flanagan and driven here by R. Halverson.
Second image shows (drawn barrier 1) Thorunder winning the Winter Improvers HCP 2080m at Cessnock on May 31st, 1974. Owner: S.K. Flanagan and Trainer/Driver: Ron Halverson.
To our third and final image, this is Thorunder (drawn barrier 8) winning the Dudley Intermediate NCP 2560m in Newcastle on July 12th, 1974. Trainer/Driver: Ron Halverson. You can see Mr Halverson is the blue and yellow silks in 1974.
What a time in Harness Racing! Have you got any images you would like to share of the previous track, your favourite horse or maybe yourself… out on the track in action?
