WAY BACK WEDNESDAY!
For this week’s Way Back Wednesday, we look to the early 90’s. Specifically to one year earlier than one of our previous #WBW’s… with the winner of the 1991 Winfield NBN Newcastle Cup, THORATE.
A great image in history from our NHRC museum’s archives.
Observers watch as the 9-year-old THORATE (drawn barrier 7) wins the 1991 Winfield NBN Newcastle Cup. Completing the 2550m run in 3 minutes 12.2 seconds [M/R: 2.1,3]. This win is just one of many, from the great THORATE. GENERATOR ran a close second with a good finish and just behind FRANCO GOLD running third. At the time, THORATE was well-loved by owners, A.J. Rawlings and A. Williams. With great harness trainer, Brian P. Hancock and brilliant driver, Howard A. James. Interesting to note, THORATE won 70 + harness races and won over $1,300,000 (stake money).
What a great time in Harness Racing! Have you seen Brian Hancock’s Gig in our museum?
