WAYBACK WEDNESDAY

This week's Wayback Wednesday comes to you courtesy of our work experience student, we think he's done a great job!
For this week’s Way Back Wednesday, we look back to the year of 1992, more specifically the 17th October 1992. When the Winfield/NBN Newcastle Cup was run and narrowly won by the 6-year-old chestnut gelding, Generator. Interesting to note, “Winfield” as a sponsor, obviously nowadays cigarette sponsorship is a thing of the past.
This day was extremely significant as trainer/driver D.W. Wilson set a new track record at Newcastle Paceway. Witnesses watched on as Wilson drove this gelding by Gammalite, out of Gloomy Lass complete the 2550m in a time of just 3 minutes and 10.60 seconds, with the mile rate standing at a blistering 2:00.3 minutes. As can be seen in the image however, this wonderful gelding may have broken the track record, but only defeated second place, Joshua Tree, by a head. Furthermore, this terrific, much-loved gelding was shared between six owners, K.J. Griffiths, T.M. Griffiths, S.A. Griffiths, B. Griffiths, L. Friedland and last but not least G.J Griffiths. So, well done to all with connections to this amazing gelding, Generator.
What a great time in Harness Racing! Where you at the Newcastle Paceway on the 17th October 1992 to witness D.W. Wilson in his red and white silks drive Generator to victory? Or maybe you heard about it elsewhere.
